Life during Victorian times was extremely different than it is now. Many things that we would find repugnant were taken for granted then. Here are a few of the more shocking examples.
If there’s anything more dehumanizing than being put in a zoo where people can gawk at you, we don’t know what it is. During Victorian times, “ethnological expositions” would bring indigenous people from all over the world to what were essentially zoos. They would be dressed up in costumes, forced to carry monkeys in their arms, and even forced to participate in “the Savage Olympics” to entertain crowds. To make things even worse, when one of the people who lived in the zoos would die, their bodies would be donated to science – with or without the person’s consent.
